Morgan Watters

Field Coordinator |  they/them/theirs

Morgan is the Field Coordinator at UNE, where they lead the deep canvassing program, recruit volunteers to find common ground with their neighbors and connect with voters at the door. UNE’s deep canvassing program is a proven voter contact method built with assistance from the New Conversation Initiative and is designed to change how people think and behave in a lasting way by talking to voters at their doors, listening to and learning about their experiences, and sharing about our own.

Morgan began their organizing journey in the LGBTQ+ movement in their hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. After seeing and living through laws that were hurting them and people they knew, Morgan found organizing and was shown the power of diverse coalitions that develop the leadership of directly impacted people to win legislative change. As Morgan sees it, the best way to build that power is face to face in the field with the people who thought they could never make a difference. In the wake of rising rents and increased instability, Morgan wants to create a world where people don’t just survive, but thrive in their communities.

Before UNE, Morgan held a number of field positions for electoral and ballot campaigns as well as longer-term field programs that built leadership capacity and field infrastructure. Some of the key campaigns that Morgan has worked on include Bernie Sanders for President, Joe Salazar for Attorney General, and the ballot campaign to raise the Colorado Minimum Wage in 2016. Through their experience in the field, Morgan knows that the best way to run campaigns is focusing on people, not on numbers. By working on campaigns that are transformational instead of transactional, Morgan has been able to build structures within organizations and communities that set people up to continue organizing to use each campaign to build permanent power. Morgan is excited to join the UNE team and build a multiracial voting majority to transform our economic, political and social systems so they work for all, no exceptions.
