Housing

Home is the place where we hug our loved ones, make our memories, and create a safe place for ourselves and our families, regardless of what we look like, our abilities, where we come from, or how much is in our wallets.

For many years in Colorado, most tenants and small landlords worked to take care of each other. But today, a need shared by all of us —  a safe place to live and grow  — is put out of our reach by the wealthiest corporations who are gaming the housing market to enrich themselves at the expense of ordinary people like you and me. The wealthiest eviction attorneys and corporate landlords divide us by race and place and try to turn us against each other, while they contribute to legislative campaigns to buy themselves protections and repeatedly increase rents, evict families, and give all landlords a bad name.

When we come together, we can make the way for housing that works for all of us and rewrite laws to protect all of our families, keep a roof over our heads, and create communities where rent is reasonable and housing options are plentiful.

UNE’s Housing Goals

Work to ensure that local governments have the ability to effectively address housing issues in their communities by removing the statewide ban on local solutions such as rent stabilization.

Build healthy and livable local communities by passing city and/or county ordinances that ensure tenants have predictable and reasonable rents.

Promote stable communities where tenants can grow roots by requiring landlords to have serious and concrete grounds in order to evict.

Promote community health and wellbeing and increase landlord accountability by passing local proactive rental inspection programs to ensure safe and dignified living conditions.

UNE is working to ensure that renters in Colorado are able to live in dignity in safe and stable housing where they can put down their roots without fear of displacement. Our work seeks to create a more even playing field for renters to take on corporate landlords and gain access to the policy tools necessary for renters to have affordable rents and dignified housing.

UNE’s specific campaigns/policy priorities:

  • Enable local housing solutions by repealing the ban on rent stabilization. Work to ensure that local governments have the ability to effectively address housing issues in their communities by removing the statewide ban on local solutions such as rent stabilization.
  • Pass local rent control policies. Build healthy and livable local communities by passing city and/or county ordinances that ensure tenants have predictable and reasonable rents.
  • Ensure people can stay in their homes by requiring real just cause for evictions (Passed April 2024!). Promote stable communities where tenants can grow roots by requiring landlords to have serious and concrete grounds in order to evict.
  • Ensure safe and dignified living conditions for all renters by passing local proactive rental inspection and licensing programs. Empower community members to advocate for safe and dignified living conditions without fear or retaliation.
